Why We Do What We Do: The Timber Reclaimers’ Story

Our journey began not with a grand vision, but with a comment. One day, while overseeing a renovation project in Ngaio, Wellington, we had a chat with a dump truck driver hauling away massive bins of timber. “At this rate, we’ll end up moving all of Ngaio to Porirua,” he joked. But beneath the humor lay a disturbing truth. Watching bin after bin of century-old timber go to waste awakened us to a problem—beautiful, irreplaceable resources from New Zealand’s native forests were being casually discarded. And so, The Timber Reclaimers were born, with a mission to reclaim, recycle, and repurpose native timber.

Preserving New Zealand’s Natural Heritage

When you hold a piece crafted from New Zealand’s native timber—be it rimu, kauri, or matai—you hold a fragment of our nation’s history. These trees, often centuries old, played a critical role in building early New Zealand. This is why The Timber Reclaimers don’t see timber as mere construction waste. Every piece has a story of growth, resilience, and transformation, and that story deserves to continue. Our commitment to preservation is grounded in a simple belief: native timber is not disposable. It represents the natural and cultural heritage of Aotearoa. This is why we go the extra mile to salvage timber from our own construction projects and from other sources across New Zealand. Rather than letting these materials rot away in landfills, we’re on a mission to bring them back to life.

From Landfill to Life: The Transformation Process

Our process begins at the construction site, where we make a straightforward request to our team: “Any piece of timber longer than your elbow to your hand—save it.” It’s much easier to simply throw everything into a skip, but that would be wasteful. Once we have our reclaimed timber, the real work begins. We remove nails, screws, and other fasteners, carefully deconstruct each piece, and give it a fresh start. Our artisans transform these raw materials into beautiful, functional pieces, preserving the character of each grain, knot, and line. From coasters to hot mats, chopping boards to art pieces, each item is handcrafted, thoughtfully designed, and skillfully finished. Through this meticulous process, every item becomes a piece of “living history”—a tribute to the strength and beauty of native timber.

An Embodiment of Kaitiakitanga: Stewardship in Every Grain

The Maori concept of kaitiakitanga, or guardianship, embodies our philosophy perfectly. Māori traditions teach us that we are stewards of the land, responsible for its well-being and preservation. For us, reclaiming native timber is a form of kaitiakitanga. By repurposing these resources, we honor both the environment and the cultural heritage tied to these magnificent trees. Each piece from The Timber Reclaimers isn’t just a product; it’s an expression of our commitment to sustainability. It’s about balancing progress with preservation, crafting with purpose, and giving back to the land that has given so much to us.

Why New Zealand Businesses Should Join the Movement

In a world increasingly moving towards sustainability, our reclaimed timber products offer New Zealand businesses a unique opportunity to make a difference. Every item we create is a message, a declaration of our shared values. When businesses choose our products as corporate gifts, they are making a powerful statement about environmental responsibility and cultural respect. For any Kiwi company looking to connect more deeply with its customers, giving a reclaimed timber gift isn’t just a token—it’s a symbol of commitment to our heritage, our environment, and our future.

From Us to You: A Gift That Tells a Story

Behind every product name and design is a story—a piece of our journey, our family, our friends, and our love for this land. Our items are gifts not just from us, but from New Zealand itself. They’re crafted for your family, your friends, and anyone who holds New Zealand close to their heart. At The Timber Reclaimers, we’re driven by a mission to honor our past, respect our environment, and shape a future where every piece of timber is cherished for the treasure it truly is. Together, let’s reclaim, recycle, and repurpose. Let’s keep the story of New Zealand’s native timber alive for generations to come.

Reclaim. Recycle. Repurpose.

This is more than our tagline—it’s our promise. Join us in making each piece of native timber a lasting legacy, a story shared, and a treasure preserved.
